The Lute Player - after Hendrick Martensz Sorgh? An old oil painting on a wooden panel, a copy after a composition attributed to Hendrick Martensz Sorgh, depicting an intimate interior scene with a musician playing the lute facing a young woman. The iconography is fully in keeping with the Dutch genre painting tradition of the 17th century, combining music, everyday life, and narrative suggestion. The execution indicates a carefully made copy, probably produced between the late 19th and early 20th century, a period when such subjects were widely reproduced for a cultivated decorative market.

Sorgh, active in Rotterdam, is known for his tavern scenes and bourgeois interiors, often animated by musicians and popular figures. His compositions were widely circulated in the form of copies and variants, intended to meet demand for old Dutch painting in European interiors. The work is made on a wooden panel, with a thin painted layer and detailed rendering of the faces and textiles.

It is presented in an old wooden frame, gilded with gold leaf or imitation gilding, with a wide, molded profile and a beautiful patina of use consistent with the whole. The reverse shows traditional construction with a solid panel and a simple hanging system. Dimensions: frame 13.5 × 11.5 cm; panel 11.5 × 9 cm.
