The two figures of the Annunciation were painted on two separate tablets, then embedded in an older wooden panel, presumably the door of a piece of furniture (due to the visible hinge and lock openings at the back), and surrounded by a lighter color. The two characters stand out on the dark wood because of the vividness of the colors.
