Cartier regularly exhibited at the Salon des artistes français. A regionalist painter passionate about his area, he depicted various scenes in his paintings, notably the Entry of Moret through the old Bridge Gate, and the Church of Moret in the evening.

And, in the Barbizon region. Under the title After the Storm, the shepherd bringing back the sheep, in front of haystacks resembling pointed hats, he also founded a museum in Moret, where he gathered works by landscape painters who were particularly charmed by Moret or who lived there. He created the only known portrait of Victorien Sardou. This actor, sought after by the most renowned artists of his time, was known to be a nervous person who disliked posing, and only Cartier had the opportunity to secure a few sessions.

Upon the actor's death, some friends of the painter donated this striking portrait, with its vivid eyes, fine mouth, and remarkably drawn hands, to the Comédie-Française, received by the general administrator Jules Claretie. Karl Cartier, born on September 5, 1855, in Paris and died in July 1925 in Moret-sur-Loing, was a French painter and museum curator. The painting is signed at the bottom right KARL CARTIER. Technique: Oil painting on wood panel. To be restored (wear and tear of time).

Dimensions of the oil painting on wood panel: height 21 cm, width 27 cm; dimensions of the wooden frame: height 24 cm, width 30 cm, depth 1 cm.
