Jean-Paul Ulysse 1925 - 2011 Prix de Rome - View of Hérouville-en-Vexin (Val d'Oise) Oil on canvas 2003. Provenance: Artist's studio fund. Expertise by Maître Martinot in Cergy (95). Signed at the bottom right. Titled and dated on the back. From Auvers sur Oise to Pontoise - river, countryside, or urban motifs - passing through the Oise valley, this tireless worker conveys to his canvases a balance achieved between vision, emotion, and the vibrations of light.

His painting is similar in this regard - much to the dismay of purists - to the Impressionist movement, particularly reminiscent of Camille Pissarro's "style." This member of the French artists' society, Grand Prix de Rome, and holder of various international awards: Rome, Deauville, attended the Grande Chaumière Academy in Paris in his early days and was exhibited in numerous regional, Parisian, and international salons where he accumulated accolades. While he did not share the fate of Van Gogh, who was overlooked during his lifetime, the brilliance of his works has indeed faded; there is, of course, no certainty in this, except for his stubbornness to remain his own master, to not identify with any movement, and to stay on the margins.

His work, indeed, resembles no other; one immediately recognizes a painting by this artist, finding in each piece that sensitivity, richness, mobility, and sobriety unique to him. For all these reasons and, of course, the dazzling beauty of his painting, we have no doubt that soon, the recognition he deserves - let’s not even speak of value - will impose itself among lovers of BEAUTY! Jean-Paul Ulysse passed away in 2011 at the age of 86, leaving an invaluable legacy for posterity.
