From Auvers-sur-Oise to Pontoise - river, countryside, or urban scenes - passing through the Oise Valley, this tireless worker conveys to his canvases a balance achieved between vision, emotion, and the vibrations of light. In this respect, his painting is akin - despite the purists - to the Impressionist movement and especially to the "touch" of Camille Pissarro. A member of the French artists' society, Grand Prix de Rome, and recipient of major international awards in Rome and Deauville, he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris at the beginning of his career and was exhibited in numerous regional, Parisian, and international salons, where he accumulated awards. Although he did not experience Van Gogh’s fate, unrecognized during his lifetime, the renown of his works has nevertheless faded.
There is, of course, no certainty about this, except for his determination to remain his own master, not to identify with any movement, and to stay on the margins. His work, indeed, resembles no other; one immediately recognizes a painting by this artist, and in each work one finds this sensitivity, richness, mobility, and sobriety that are uniquely his. For all these reasons, and of course the striking beauty of his painting, we have no doubt that soon the recognition he deserves - not to mention his market value - will naturally establish itself among lovers of BEAUTY! Jean-Paul Ulysse passed away in 2011, at the age of 86, leaving posterity an invaluable treasure.
