Attilio Achille BOZZATO (1886–1954) – Boats in Chioggia, Venice – Oil Painting, c. 1930
The Artwork: A captivating, luminous Italian Post-Impressionist maritime scene by the recognized Venetian artist Attilio Achille Bozzato. This painting beautifully depicts traditional Adriatic fishing boats (bragozzi), with their distinctive warm ochre sails, peacefully moored alongside wooden pilings (bricole) in the lagoon of Chioggia, just south of Venice. Bozzato’s mastery of Venetian light is fully evident: the water in the foreground is painted with bold, energetic, textured brushstrokes, blending cool sea greens and slate blues with warm amber reflections from the boats’ hulls and rigging. Painting outdoors, directly from nature, he captured the fleeting light of the Adriatic coast with remarkable authenticity.
