Signed dated lower left "Victor the Man / 1910". Number written on the back. Victor Lomme, a native of Lille, is a painter and decorator who worked on various media: wall decorations, posters, stained glass boxes, tapestries, ceramic panels and embroidery on fabrics. Our painting is perhaps a study for a wall decoration: this grisaille uses only two colors, white and red. But it is at the same time a nice portrait of a young woman guarding her herd of cows and painted in a very naturalistic way.
Lhommea paints several scenes of genera to the campgane in this style, including a fisherman in his boat preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lille.
