Beautiful & charming romantic painting (oil on canvas marouflé on a wooden panel), dating from xixe and without signature. This is a study of a scene where one sees a man drinking.

He only wears a garment (called a tribòn) and a hat whose strap is hung on his neck that hangs in his back. We can guess that apart from this thin clothing, this man is naked.

He holds in his left hand a stick and in his right hand a shield in which he recovered water from the fountain which is in front of him. Around it lies vegetation, mainly trees and one imagines that it is actually near a city, reclusive.

This man is actually the Greek philosopher, diogenous of sinope. He deeply marked the Athenians and was known to live out of society with the strict minimum.

He thus denounces social conventions, advocating a simpler way of life and closer to nature. He would have used to beg in front of statues in order to get used to their refusal to give him money.

This high-colored character has been represented in numerous paintings in the history of art at tiepolo, at Raphael in the school of athenes, at Jean-leon gérome in xixe, etc... And also often represented in the immense jar that served as a shelter for him.

The work is not signed but is of quality. It seems that this is a study for a larger work. Serious research will have to be carried out in order to be able to hope for an award. Dimensions: - 38 cm / 27 cm. 47.5 cm / 36 cm (frame). Note: the original canvas was maroufled on a recent wooden panel. There are small gaps in the framework, but nothing serious and the whole remains in excellent condition! I'll be at your disposal if you have any questions.
