Son of Edme Julien Gilbert, master tailor, and Catherine Darras, he took lessons from the naval construction engineer Pierre Ozanne and Louis-Philippe Crépin. In 1816, he was appointed drawing professor for naval students in Brest. In 1830, he participated in the Algerian campaign on the Provence, serving as the official painter of the expedition.
From 1842 to 1850, he taught drawing at the Naval School. This industrious artist depicted a considerable number of episodes from French maritime history on canvas, and most of his paintings were featured in exhibitions, notably in 1824 and 1833, which earned him a gold medal each time. On April 30, 1833, he was made a knight of the Legion of Honor.
