PIERRE JULIEN GILBERT. Animated Marine Landscape Oil Painting on Wood Panel

  
Son of Edme Julien Gilbert, master tailor, and Catherine Darras, he took lessons from marine engineer Pierre Ozanne and Louis-Philippe Crépin. In 1816, he was appointed drawing teacher for the students of the navy in Brest. In 1830, he took part in the Algerian campaign on board the Provence, as the official painter of the expedition. From 1842 to 1850, he taught drawing at the Naval School. This diligent artist captured on canvas a considerable number of episodes from the illustrious history of the French navy, and most of his paintings were featured in exhibitions, notably those of 1824 and 1833, which earned him a gold medal each.

On April 30, 1833, he was made a knight of the Legion of Honor. It is a framed painting representing a maritime landscape with ships near a coastline.

The painting has a classic and detailed style, depicting several large sailing ships and small boats. The ornate golden frame adds a vintage aesthetic to the artwork.
