Despite the paternal opposition, he left the military school and enrolled in 1894 at Joseph Quinaux.

He was then student of Joseph Stallaert at the Brussels Academy until 1900. To earn a living, he restores paintings. He married a musician in 1905 then moved to Paris and worked in Barbizon. He meets maurice blieck in 1906 who will influence him a lot. He then returns to Belgium and travels a lot (germany, england) but will often paint in brittany (france).
