Oil Paintings on Wood, René Roussel, Alsace, Brewery, Beer
A pair of antique oil paintings on wood, originally used as decorations in an Alsatian brasserie, depicting a young Alsatian woman and the mythical King Gambrinus. Both are signed René Roussel, who is known for his book illustrations and his restoration and decorative work at the Trianon palaces and the Queen’s Hamlet at Versailles in the 1930s. He also undertook interior decoration projects for private homes. A monograph is dedicated to his work: René Roussel: Le Mée 1885–Issoudun 1962: Painter of Light.
Dimensions: 44 cm x 45 cm (Gambrinus); 40 cm x 44 cm (Alsatian woman).
Some damage and losses are visible in the photographs: at two corners of the Gambrinus painting and in various places on the painting of the Alsatian woman (see photos).
