Cartier regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. A regionalist painter passionate about his area, he evoked in his various paintings, notably the Entrance of Moret through the Old Bridge Gate, and the Church of Moret in the evening. And, in the area of Barbizon. Under the title After the Storm, the shepherd bringing back the sheep, in front of haystacks resembling pointed hats, he also established a museum in Moret, where he gathered works by landscape painters who were particularly enchanted by Moret or who lived there.
He created the only known portrait of Victorien Sardou. This actor, sought after by the most renowned painters of his time, was known to be a nervous individual who disliked posing; only Cartier had the opportunity to secure a few sessions. Upon the actor's death, some friends of the painter presented this portrait, whose features are striking, with bright eyes, a fine mouth, and hands of remarkable drawing, to the Comédie-Française, received by the general administrator Jules Claretie.
