Jean-Paul Ulysse 1925 - 2011 Prix de Rome - View of Hérouville-en-Vexin (Val d'Oise) Oil on canvas 2003. Provenance: Artist's studio fund. Expertise by Maître Martinot in Cergy (95).

Signed at the bottom right. Titled and dated on the back. From Auvers sur Oise to Pontoise - river, rural, or urban motifs - passing through the Oise valley, this tireless worker conveys to his canvases a balance achieved between vision, emotion, and the vibrations of light.

His painting is akin in this regard - much to the dismay of purists - to the Impressionist movement and notably to the "style" of Camille Pissarro. This member of the Société des artistes français, Grand Prix de Rome, holder of several international awards: Rome, Deauville, frequented the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris in his early days and was exhibited in numerous regional, Parisian, and international salons where he garnered multiple awards. While he did not meet the fate of Van Gogh, who was little known during his lifetime, the radiance of his works has nevertheless faded; of course, there is no certainty about this, except for his stubbornness to remain his own master, not to identify with any movement, and to remain on the margins.

His work, indeed, resembles none other; one immediately recognizes a painting by this artist, and in each work, one finds that sensitivity, richness, mobility, and sobriety unique to him. For all these reasons and, of course, the radiant beauty of his painting, we have no doubt that soon, the recognition he deserves - let’s not even speak of value - will assert itself among lovers of BEAUTY! Jean-Paul Ulysse passed away in 2011 at the age of 86, leaving an invaluable legacy for posterity.
