Jean-Paul Ulysse 1925 - 2011 Prix de Rome - Pontoise Shore Oil on canvas June 2001. Provenance: Artist's studio fund. Expertise by Maître Martinot in Cergy (95). Signed, dated, and titled on the back. From Auvers-sur-Oise to Pontoise - river, rural, or urban motifs - through the Oise Valley, this tireless worker conveys to his canvases a balance achieved between vision, emotion, and the vibrations of light. His painting is similar in this regard - much to the chagrin of purists - to the Impressionist movement, particularly the "style" of Camille Pissarro. This member of the Société des Artistes Français, Grand Prix de Rome, and holder of numerous international awards: Rome, Deauville, frequented the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris in his early days and was exhibited in many regional, Parisian, and international salons where he accumulated accolades. While he did not share the fate of Van Gogh, who was underappreciated during his lifetime, the radiance of his works has nevertheless faded; to this, of course, there is no certainty, except for his stubbornness to remain his own master, to not identify with any movement, and to stay on the sidelines. His work, indeed, resembles no other, and one immediately recognizes a painting by this artist; in each work, one finds that sensitivity, richness, mobility, and sobriety that is uniquely his. For all these reasons and, of course, the striking beauty of his painting, we have no doubt that soon, the recognition he deserves - not to mention a market value - will impose itself upon lovers of BEAUTY! Jean-Paul Ulysse passed away in 2011, at the age of 86, leaving behind an invaluable legacy for posterity.
