Jean-Paul Ulysse 1925 - 2011 Prix de Rome - Pontoise riverside Oil on canvas June 2001. Provenance: Artist’s studio collection.

Expert appraisal by Maître Martinot in Cergy (95). Signed, dated, and titled on the back.

From Auvers-sur-Oise to Pontoise—riverside, countryside, and urban subjects—passing through the Oise Valley, this tireless worker brings to his canvases an equilibrium achieved between vision, emotion, and the vibrations of light. In this respect, his painting resembles—despite what purists may say—the Impressionist movement, and notably the touch of Camille Pissarro.

A member of the Société des Artistes Français, Grand Prix de Rome, and recipient of major international prizes in Rome and Deauville, he began his career at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and exhibited in many regional, Parisian, and international salons, where he won numerous awards.

If he did not share Van Gogh’s fate of being unrecognized during his lifetime, the reach of his work has nevertheless faded.

There is, of course, no certainty as to why, except for his stubborn determination to remain his own master, to identify with no movement, and to stay on the margins. His work, in fact, resembles no other; one immediately recognizes a painting by this artist.

In each work, one finds that same sensitivity, richness, mobility, and sobriety that are uniquely his.

For all these reasons and, of course, the radiant beauty of his painting, we have no doubt that soon the recognition he deserves—not to mention his market value—will establish itself among lovers of BEAUTY! Jean-Paul Ulysse passed away in 2011 at the age of 86, leaving posterity an invaluable treasure.
