Provenance: sale of the painter's studio by his rightful holders. Painting from the late 19th century.

Dimensions: 22 x 27 cm. Dimensions with frame: 25 x 29 cm. Condition: good general condition, no shortage or restorations, small scratch on the right edge. Coming from a well-to-do family, François Gautier had the means to paint.

He studied at the Jesuit College before joining the school of fine arts in Marseille and getting a medal. There he rubbed shoulders with the masters emile loubon, jean-Baptiste olive or adolphe monticelli. He exhibited at the betting parloary from 1866 to 1870, but the war ended there. He was appointed official painter of the navy in 1910. Friend with the patron and collector Jules cantini (whose name a museum in Marseille bears), he devoted his whole life to painting.
