Original oil painting on wood by Elio Gervasi, titled “Pulcinella and the Winged Horse,” an example of Italian naïve painting with a magical, dreamlike quality reminiscent of Marc Chagall’s imaginary world. This brightly colored figurative work blends folk imagination, theatrical tradition, and poetic fantasy. It is signed and bears the artist’s certificate of authenticity on the reverse.

Elio Gervasi transforms the landscape into a miniature theatre of the imagination. At the center of the scene, Pulcinella stands beside a white winged horse, while a small dog joins their encounter. Behind them lies a peaceful village, with snow-covered roofs, fences, and bare trees beneath a sky shaded in pink and magenta, crossed by two white birds.

On either side, large flowers and multicolored leaves frame the composition like theatrical scenery. Their exuberance, juxtaposed with the winter landscape, heightens the scene’s otherworldly, fairy-tale atmosphere. The simplified forms, clear outlines, and colors freed from naturalistic constraints place the work within the visual language of naïve art.

The meeting of the everyday and the marvelous suggests affinities with Marc Chagall’s poetic world. The snow-covered village and the graphic branching patterns of the trees recall the landscapes of Ivan Generalic, a major figure in Croatian naïve painting, while the lush, oversized vegetation, punctuated by ornamental patterns, evokes the fantastical settings of Henri Rousseau, known as “Le Douanier.”

Born in Messina, Gervasi moved to Rome in 1967 and studied at the capital’s National Institute of Art. He began exhibiting at a very young age, in 1965. His painting draws inspiration from Sicilian folk art, particularly the decoration of traditional carts and votive paintings. He reinterprets their brilliant colors and storytelling traditions through a personal artistic language rooted in dreams, memory, and imagination.
