Émile Gauffriaud is a landscape and marine painter. Pierre Péron evokes his silhouette in his book De la Rue de Siam à Recouvrance: “The artist with the big hat, with wide brims and the large lavallière tie as it should be. The handsome man who spends his days painting the sardine boats, moon reflections on the water, or well-finished undergrowth, which his pretty wife and his not-so-pretty daughter with the beautiful English-style curl sell at the...” His career is rather poorly documented. At most, it is known from paintings that have appeared at auction that he also lived in Limousin and in Le Croisic. As Pierre Péron writes, he paints very carefully finished seascapes, fishermen’s wives, and stretches of coastline with lighting effects such as sunset or moonrise. He does not seem to have painted much after 1930, if one believes the dates shown on his works.
