Warneton, 1798 - Schaerbeek, 1881. 42 x 33.5 cm (58 x 50 cm with frame). Signed, dated and located at the bottom right "e. Verboeckhoven / 1826 / to gand". Belgian painter and watercolourist, eugene verboeckhoven was a pupil of balthazar ommeganck.
He exhibited to gand in 1820. He will also be general manager of Brussels museums. He liked to represent animals in a landscape of the countryside, first cows and bulls in the 1820s, then horses, donkeys and sheep as well as goats from the 1840s. His style is linked to the realistic tradition by his master ommeganck with a rare attention to detail and a truly miniaturist bill.
Verboeckhoven is one of the best Belgian animal painters of the first half of the 19th century. The fineness of his touch and his colors made him say to the baudelaire that his art was "surprising, vitreous, desolating to make envious meissonnier, landseer and vernet horace"!
