Interesting anonymous 19th-century painting executed in the pure style of the Barbizon School, depicting a view of a hamlet in a twilight or stormy countryside... The reverse of the panel bears the stamp of the canvas and paint merchant "Hardy-Alan," established in Paris since 1862. He was a merchant with an excellent reputation among artists for the quality of his materials, and he supplied the great painters of the Barbizon School, and later those of Impressionism as well. It should be noted that the artist of this painting did not seek to convey the romantic character of the countryside, but rather the force of the natural elements, such as the embankment in the foreground and the troubled gray sky...

This is a style seen in the Barbizon precursors who were then described as Naturalist or Realist, among them Jules Dupré, Gustave Courbet, and Théodore Rousseau, who bought their supplies from Hardy-Alan. For collectors interested in research. Please note that this painting on wood (mahogany or walnut) has been reinforced on the back to stop a natural crack visible at the upper left in the sky / photo detail.

Panel size (wood): 46 cm x 29 cm. Ask me for more photos if needed.
