Adolphe Joseph Thomas Monticelli (born October 14, 1824 in Marseille, died June 29, 1886 in the same city) was a French painter, a precursor to Impressionism. His family had Italian origins and settled in Marseille in the 18th century.

Monticelli attended a drawing school in Marseille and copied paintings at the local museum. Between 1846 and 1849, he studied in Paris in the studio of Paul Delaroche, while independently studying the works of the old masters at the Louvre.

His artistic development was influenced by the romantic painters Eugène Delacroix and Narcisse Virgilio Díaz de la Peña. Between 1873 and 1870, the artist spent most of his time in Paris, where he absorbed the painters of Barbizon; after the Franco-Prussian War, he permanently moved to Marseille, where he lived and worked until his death. Adolphe Monticelli developed his own innovative style, considered by art critics as a precursor to Impressionism and Expressionism. He painted portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, but mostly gallant party scenes, refined depictions of entertainment and concerts at the court.

He frequently depicted circus artists, theatrical scenes, and masquerades. He used an innovative painting technique, with thick impastos and bright, luminous colors. His works evoke both Rococo artists and the romantic period. The painter was particularly close to Paul Cézanne and strongly influenced the works of Vincent van Gogh. Under the influence of his works, van Gogh decided to lighten his color palette and adopt more daring compositional solutions.

The painting is framed in a beautiful handmade frame, covered with imitation gold leaf which is not the subject of the auction, it is a free addition to the painting.
