Born in 1854, gabriel biessy started at the lyon school of fine arts as a student of lenient felix before entering the studio of carolus-duran in paris in 1879. He sent his first portraits to the show in 1882 and then began a series Travel to Holland, Portugal, Senegal and especially South America. A traveling painter, he ended his career as director of the fine arts of Cairo.

He mainly painted portraits, views of paris or American and Parisian genre scenes, representing the life of his time with a preference for nocturnal scenes like the painting we present.
