Oil on parquet oak panel. Flemish style frame in blackened molded wood with imitation shell plating. Total dimensions with the frame: 82 x 65 cm. During the first half of the seventeenth century and in a climate of global reform affecting the whole of Dutch society, a number of new pictorial compositions emerged. The scenes representing the guard-houses are rather rare, our painting encamps four soldiers having deposited armor and standards on a ground made of broad planks of wood. It is "the rest of the soldier" a moment of relaxation with a game of cards, that the painter wanted to show us. The background is plain and sober to showcase these officers dressed in rich costumes and large headgear. Antonie Palamedesz was born in 1601 in Delft in the Netherlands.

He comes from a family of artists. His father, of Flemish origin, is a sculptor of semi-precious stones such as agate, porphyry, jasper, and manufactures decorative art objects. His father works in England for the king jacques of Scotland, but at the birth of brother palamedes palamedesz, he returns to live in delft to raise his children. He became a member of the saint luc guild of delft in 1621 or 1636. The year 1638 was marked by the death of his brother painter palamedes palamedesz.

He is married twice and has four children. In 1673, he became dean of the saint luc guild of delft. Antonie Palamedsz specializes in painting portraits and genre scenes, while his brother Palamedes specializes in painting battle scenes. Antonie studies painting with the painters michiel jansz. Van Mierevelt and Hans Jordaens.
